General Motors Co. is teasing its new Cadillac ELR plug-in electric luxury coupe that will be unveiled next month at the North American International Auto Show.

An image of the extended-range electric ELR was distributed Tuesday, which included text that read "its confidently sculpted lines are as dramatic as the technology they conceal — a state-of-the-art electric propulsion system featuring a ranging-extending, gas-powered generator.

"One look at the ELR, and you'll realize that it's as much a powerful statement as it is a statement about power."

The ELR, the first two-door car built at Detroit-Hamtramck since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado, is the production version of the Cadillac Converj. The Converj was revealed as a concept and received much praise during the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The ELR will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant beginning late next year, GM's North American President Mark Reuss said October.

The plant, which also builds the Chevrolet Volt, will invest $35 million to upgrade the plant to build the extended-range electric ELR, Reuss said. Sales could start in early 2014, he said.

Reuss said in October the range has not been certified for the ELR, but GM will use a bigger tire and wheel on the ELR compared to the Volt and it will use the battery differently on the luxury coupe.

Reuss has said when the public and media get to see the car "you will be pretty blown away."

GM sees the ELR as one vehicle that will help it to expand its Cadillac brand globally.

Cadillac plans to introduce 10 new products or major redesigns within the next three years, including the all-new ATS and XTS sedans that recently hit dealer lots, and wants to regain the top sales spot in the U.S. luxury market. It last held that crown in 1997.

GM said the new investment for the ELR boosts total product investment at Detroit-Hamtramck to $561 million since December 2009.

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant, which employs about 1,560 workers, also builds the Opel Ampera for European markets, the Holden Volt for Australia and Chevrolet Malibu, and also will build the all-new Chevy Impala, which will begin arriving on dealer lots early next year.

LG Chem will supply cells for the lithium-ion battery for the ELR, Reuss said, and the battery will be built at GM's Brownstown Battery Assembly plant in Brownstown Township.
